World in Balance: People Paradox
India is currently the fastest growing nation in the world, and will soon pass China in being the nation with the largest population. Families within India are often kept very large because of the “need” for a son. In Indian culture, the daughters leave their family to go live with their husband’s family. Therefore, every family wishes to have a son that can stay and take care of the parents when they are elderly. There is a high amount of gender discrimination in India. Millions of females are aborted simply because they are female. Therefore, there are 35 million less females than males. With the nation growing so quickly, they are facing a lack of space because too many children are being born. Women play a vital role in this because so many families continue to have children UNTIL they have a son.
The fertility rate in Japan is currently the lowest in human history. Two incomes are considered “necessary” in Japan so that they will be able to educate their children and maintain a position in the middle class. Within Japan, there are far more elderly children than there are infants/young children. The fertility rate being so low is a major problem for Japan. This is impacted by the role of women because in Japan, it is very normal for a woman to have a job. Therefore, unlike in India and other nations, where women are simply responsible for having babies, Japanese women have other, more important personalities.
In Africa, the forest’s are disappearing faster than any other in the world to meet the rising demands for food, space and shelter. The space is needed very badly and therefore the forests are cut down as a result. This is impacted by the role of women because of the increasing population/fertility.
